Groom dies in gory crash, bride in coma

A joyful wedding reception at Madina, a suburb of Accra, turned sorrowful following a tragic accident which claimed the life of the bridegroom, with the bride battling for her life at the hospital.

Tears flowed at the venue after news broke that the bridegroom, Disu Kamaru, had died in a car accident en route to the venue on what could have been the happiest day of his life.

Family sources indicated that the deceased and his newly wedded wife, Janatil Firdaws Yakubu, were on their way to the wedding reception at Africana Guest House, near the Atomic Interchange, when the unfortunate incident occurred.

The bride turned widow, whose health deteriorated quickly within a few hours, was hospitalized.

The incident occurred on Sunday, September 30, 2018, at about 1pm at Madina Atomic Road.

Information gathered by DAILY GUIDE indicates that they initially held the Islamic marriage ceremony in Takoradi where Islamic clerics performed the necessary rites to cement the marriage between Kamara Disu and his wife, Janatil Firdaws Yakubu.

Family sources revealed that the two love birds successfully tied the nuptial knot in Takoradi in the Western Region but decided to have the party in Accra.

The couple and two other friends were said to be travelling in a Hyundai Fantasy to the venue when the incident occurred.

A driver of a vehicle reportedly attempted to overtake another car, but lost control and rammed the vehicle of the couple, forcing it to crash into a tree.

He was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Major Alhaji Disu (Rtd), father of the deceased, who could not bear the pain, reportedly collapsed upon hearing of the incident.

He was subsequently rushed to a nearby health facility.

The deceased was buried yesterday according to Islamic tradition.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of police, (DSP) Effia Tenge, when contacted said the Kwabenya Police received news of the accident at about 1:30pm on Sunday.

She said when the police got to Atomic area where the accident occurred, the occupants had already been rushed to the hospital for treatment but saw the Hyundai Fantasy with registration number GT 2059-17 at the scene.

The police chief said the vehicle was towed to the police station and preliminary investigations revealed that the occupants were heading towards North Legon from Taifa.

She said the police were still investigating the matter.

I'll never divorce my husband - Benedicta Gafah pledges

Actress Benedicta Gafah has vowed that she will never get divorced once she gets married because it is a no go area in her family.

The Zylofon media signed actress in a reply to a question about rumors that were circulating that she was once married and has divorced her husband told Zionfelix the host of ‘Celebrity Ride With Zionfelix’ that she has never been married and once she gets married she is in till she dies or her husband dies.

Benedicta also emphasized that in her family nobody gets married and get divorced.

She stated that it is more like an omen to them and that is why her family does not pressurize any of her young daughters to get into marriage.

She added that even if you have a problem in your marriage, all that the family will ask you to do is to come down to the family house for about three to four days and go back to your husband when the whole issue settles down.

The actress, therefore, vowed that she will not in any way get married and divorce her husband and as such those spreading those rumors are just peddling lies.

Benedicta Gafah also added that she is currently receiving a lot of marriage proposals from men but she is not interested in all of them because she is currently seriously dating.

Nigerians want to claim highlife, let’s be careful – Professor Collins warns

A renowned music professor has cautioned Ghanaians against altering history by saying highlife music is not Ghanaian.

Professor John Collins, who has done an extensive work on the history of Ghanaian music, particularly highlife, noted that Ghanaians should be circumspect because Nigeria is trying to claim highlife as theirs.

Reacting to comments made by dancehall artiste, Jupitar, that “Highlife is not Ghanaian music…Highlife music is Ashanti music,” the music scholar with the University of Ghana said those comments are not accurate.

Reacting to the comments on the Cosmopolitan Mix on Joy FM with Doreen Andoh, Prof Collins said Jupitar and others like him should get a lot of education about the subject.

He said, “highlife is not Ashanti. It was originally Fanti and Ga and then, he [Jupitar] also said it wasn’t Ghanaian, at the moment Nigerians are trying to claim highlife so he should be careful about saying that,” he said.

“The word itself was invented in Ghana in the 1920s but what we call highlife goes back maybe 20 or 30 years earlier…,” the music professor added.

Giving an extensive history on highlife, Prof John Collins noted that in 1938, highlife was taken out of Ghana to Nigeria by the Cape Coast Sugar Babies and then in the 1950s by E.T Mensah.

“When I first used to go to Nigeria in the 1970s, all the older generation knew that highlife came from Ghana. It’s the younger generation on both sides who seem to have forgotten where it comes from,” he explained.

The music scholar who recently launched a book Highlife Time 3 which chronicles the history of the genre urged Ghanaians to be proud of highlife and make money from it.

The military and highlife

According to the music professor, highlife music suffered greatly during the various coup d'etats in the country.

“A lot of the music I met in the 60s and 70s disappeared in the 80s and early 90s during the military era. We had 250 guitar bands in the country [and] 150 dance bands so everything had to be reborn,” he said.

'Don’t use cocoa support funds for personal use’ - Samuel Adimado

The Managing Director of Kuapa Kokoo, Samuel Adimado, has warned farmers to desist from using cocoa support funds for personal things such as marrying and acquiring properties.

He said the funds were meant for buying improved seedlings and other incentives to improve yields and ensure high quality of the produce.

Mr Adimado issued the warning at the 24th delegates conference of Kuapa Kokoo Co-operative Cocoa Farmers and Marketing Union Limited (KKFU), a farmers union under Kuapa Kokoo, in Kumasi last Wednesday.

A total of 300 delegates and observers thronged the Miklin Hotel to deliberate on their welfare and how to improve productivity.

He said the funds given by Kuapa Kokoo were part of its social intervention to help improve the quality of cocoa produced and should not be abused.

The cocoa merchant company has over the years supported farmers with extension officers, seedlings, fertilisers and other farming tools to increase yields.

Executive Secretary

The acting Executive Secretary of Kuapa Kokoo, Mr Nelson Adubofour, said the company paid a ‘cash distribution’ of GH¢6,799,436.75, the highest in recent times by any cocoa buying company in the country.

Young women in cocoa production

Mr Adubofour said Kuapa Kokoo had rolled out a successful pilot project for young women in cocoa production and it was expected to be expanded.

In all, 22 farms have been established, with an average acre of one with 22 enterprising young ladies with an average age 24 years.

In the year under review, the participants were supported with some farm inputs ranging from farm tools to agro chemical and extension services and regular visit to their farms.

Yam project

Mr Adubofour said as part of efforts to diversify farmer income and increase food security, the Kuapa Kokoo yam project was scaled up through its gender unit to cover 12 societies, aside Sankore.

The societies are Konongo, Offinso, Nkawie, Assin Breku, Breman Asikuma, Manso Amenfi, Enchi A, Enchi B, Akontombra, Dadieso, Bibiani and Tepa.

The target farmers for this year were made up of about 90 per cent women and10 per cent men.

Child labour

Mr Adubofour applauded farmers for their contribution in helping fight child labour in cocoa growing areas.

The company has embarked on a series of awareness creation and is using visits to schools, farms and zones and others just to ensure that children of school age are in school.

Health scheme

The acting executive secretary said the Kuapa Kokoo Health Insurance Scheme, one of its social interventions for farmers, continued to face serious challenges with respect to enrolment of patients.

He said plans were afoot to assist the health insurance officers to register more farmers on the scheme.

Chief Nat

The Country Director, Millennium Promise Alliance Ghana, one of the partners of Kuapa Kokoo, Chief Nat Ebo Nsarko, announced that the two companies were working to launch a TeleAgric Centre which would apply state-of-the-art technology to provide support services for farmers and advance farming.

He said the two companies were mobilising the youth with the aim of empowering them to embrace ‘agripreneurship.’'

“At the same time, we continue to forge new domestic and international partnership in our drive to diversify into other crops in addition to cocoa farming,” he said.

Coffee

Chief Nsarko said through the Coffee Federation of Ghana, the two companies were facilitating efforts to develop Ghana’s coffee sector.

New executive

A 13-member new executive of the union, headed by Fatima Ali, was officially inaugurated.

Teachers, unsung heroes of Ghana – Bawumia

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has lauded the enormous contribution of teachers to Ghana’s socio-economic development.

Describing teachers as “unsung heroes”, Vice President Bawumia extolled the dedication and selflessness exhibited by practitioners of the teaching profession over the years, and pledged the Nana Akufo-Addo government’s commitment to recognizing the contributions of hardworking and selfless teachers towards improvement of education in the country through a wide range of incentives and reforms.

“These dedicated men and women are our unsung heroes, often working in less than ideal conditions and toiling hard not only to impart knowledge in us but to shape our moral code and prepare us to be responsible citizens” Vice President Bawumia declared in Accra on Friday 5th October, 2018 in Accra.

The Vice President, who was speaking at the maiden edition of the ‘Ghana Teacher Prize awards’, formerly ‘National Best Teacher awards’, held at the Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (Presec), Legon commended teachers for their very significant role in shaping every sphere of national life.

“Teachers play a pivotal role in the development of our human resource and remain key in the achievement of the overall development of the country. To teach is to inspire, to challenge, to mold, to develop thinking, to sow seeds for the future. Let me therefore, on this momentous occasion, on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, use this opportunity to salute our gallant teachers for their commitment to duty.”

The success of the innovative double track system, which has provided access into Senior High Schools this year for an additional 180,000 JHS graduates, would largely depend on teachers, Vice President Bawumia underscored, and urged teachers to re-dedicate themselves to the cause while Government works to address their concerns.

“Government is aware that no matter its best intention, the double track system will not be successfully executed and produce desired results without the teacher. We have had meaningful engagements with the various teacher unions on the double track system, and in all these engagements, the interests of the teacher have been primary.”

“I wish to assure our gallant teachers and their leaders that the government of President Nana Akufo-Addo is fully committed to the welfare of teachers. We are fully open to engagements with the profession on making improvements to your welfare, because we believe in the importance of the work you do in developing our human resource capacity as a nation,” Vice President Bawumia indicated.

The 2018 Most Outstanding Teacher Award was won by Forsey Nicholas of Bishop Herman Senior High School. For his prize, he takes away a three bedroom house worth Ghs180,000 and other assorted items.

Second Runner up Owusu Antipem of Nsutaman Senior High School received a Saloon car and a cheque for Ghs 50,000, while First Runner up Augusta Lartey of Presbyterian Boys Senior High School received a 4*4 Pick Up vehicle worth Ghs130,000.

“Clearly this is a sad day for professional legal education for Ghana. The published results are very dispiriting and discouraging, very disappointing and clearly unacceptable. The results as we have now don’t reflect the true performance of the students. We can’t vouch for the integrity of these results, the integrity of the results is questionable,” he said.

Six-year-old girl makes history by climbing Mount Afadja

Hiking to the top of the Afadja Mountain which seems highly impossible for some adults became an easy task for young Adabla Edudzi, a Kindergarten Two female pupil of the Wuxor D/A Basic School in the Akatsi South District of the Volta Region. Six-year-old Adabla, stunned her teachers and mates when she managed to hit the Adabla Edudzi has become the youngest

A lot of pupils and even some of their teachers who tried to climb the mountain gave up midway into the hike but young Adabla with perseverance and determination was able to get to the top.

I’ve been poisoned on several occasions – Guru reveals

Rapper Guru is counting his blessings after surviving several attempts on his life.

According to the rapper, before the release of his latest album, Journey of Judah, he was poisoned on several occasions.

The NKZ music boss said several attempts were made on his life including people poisoning the water he drinks and food he eats.

“It wasn’t once. It was a continuous thing. [There are] different strategies that people use to poison people. Some will pass through food, some will pass through water anytime you are on stage you give your water to someone else and it’s a different ball game,” he told KMJ in an interview on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM.

Recounting one of the near-fatal incidents, he said, “the last time I was on stage performing, got on stage, the whole crowd jamming and all of a sudden you [take] water and your voice is not ‘popping’ up again, you can’t even talk…so you just have to move up.”

The rapper, born Nana Yaw Adjei Yeboah Maradona, said he has endured a lot and things have been “very difficult.”

To him, these attempts are things some people do to those in show business to bring others down.

“Every artiste, every industry player will, by all means, experience this…if you’ve not gone through it, expect it, prepare for it…people you love the most, you expect to be there for you will move away…,” the ‘Problem’ rapper said.

Guru says he is stronger now and the experience inspired his 24-track ‘Journey of Judah’ double album.

“The album talks about my real life,” he said.

Government has abandoned our projects – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama is raising questions over the government’s inability to continue projects started under his administration.

Mr Mahama says as he toured the country to campaign for the flagbearership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), it is clear that all the projects that were handed over to the NPP government are on standstill.

He said "all the roads we were working on has come to a standstill, all the E-Block Community Day Senior High Schools have come to a standstill, the hospitals and CHPS compounds we were building across the country are standstill, and it is the same with the electricity and water projects that were embarked upon to extend power to communities and safe drinking water".

Mr Mahama made the comments when he addressed hundreds of NDC delegates in Yendi, as part of his campaign tour of the Northern Region.

He urged Ghanaians not to lose hope, as the next NDC government in 2020 will ensure the successful completion of abandoned projects.

Observing that Ghanaians are currently going through economic hardship, he pledged to work hard to reduce the high cost of living and provide jobs, when he is elected in 2020.

On the NDC flagbearership elections, Mr Mahama said he was surprised at the behavior of the NPP over his decision to contest.

He said very often, one always hear members of the NPP questioning why the NDC would want to bring him back as their flagbearer as they would easily defeat him.

He said, if it is true that the NPP would easily defeat him in 2020 then they should be rejoicing rather than complaining.

"Two teams are playing football and the other tells the opponent that if you put in a particular goalkeeper I will score you. That means the opponent is afraid of the goalkeeper," he said.

He noted that the NPP is clearly afraid of his second coming, as they are aware that, he is the only candidate with the experience to win back power for the NDC in 2020.

Mr Mahama has therefore urged NDC delegates to massively endorse him on December 7, 20 18, when the NDC goes to the polls, to enable him wrestle power from the NPP in 2020.
